Different Forms of HRT: Micronor
(progestin -- norethindrone)

Also known as the "mini-pill," norethindrone is another synthetic progesterone that is similar to Aygestin, but has another chemical group attached to it. It’s widely used as an progesterone-only birth control pill, one that has fewer risks because it doesn’t contain estrogen. But it’s also used in HRT as a progesterone replacement. It’s a very low dose progestin -- only .35 mg. Because it’s such a low dose, it’s most commonly prescribed in continuous HRT -- you take both estrogen and Micronor every day. In addition, its low dose is a plus because it causes fewer side effects that other progestins. The other big plus? It stops breakthrough bleeding (bleeding while on continuous HRT) quickly, usually within 9 months.

  • Standard dosage: .35 mgs
  • Pros: Low dose, so causes fewer side effects; swiftly reduces breakthrough bleeding than
  • Cons: Low dose may require closer tracking to be sure to avoid endometrial problems; may cause increase in cholesterol levels and weight gain as well as other androgenic effects

EarlyMenopause.com does NOT endorse any one form of treatment. We're all different, and what works for one of us might not work for another. Nor is the site tied commercially to ANY drug or supplement – unlike other sites which, while claiming no sponsorship, do get money for "click-throughs" on ads or orders generated from the site. This is one reason why, other than listing the brand names for HRT, no brand names are (implicitly or explicitly) recommended.

Along these lines, EarlyMenopause.com does not accept advertising of any sort, nor is funded by any company or by a grant (unrestricted or otherwise) from any corporation, but is privately funded by the site owner.
