(estropipate)
Another estrogen that is plant-derived, estropipate is made from
purified crystalline estrone. In effect, then, when you take estropipate, youre
getting the final byproduct of estradiol and conjugated estrogens, since the liver
converts the estrogens in them to estrone.
Weaker than the other estrogens, you need to take a
higher dosage of estropipate to get the same levels of estradiol and estrone in your blood
system you get from taking a standard dose of either conjugated estrogens or micronized
estradiol.
You get the same benefits from estropipate, however, in
terms of eliminating symptoms and fighting osteoporosis and heart disease. In addition,
because you are getting the weaker end product of estradiol, estropipate is often
prescribed to women who have side effects from the other estrogens, such as breast
tenderness and bloating.
- Standard dosage: Ogen: 0.75
mg estropipate in 0.625, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg tablets; Ortho-Est: 0.625 and 1.25 mg.
- Pros: P.plant-derived estrone.
Like the other estrogens, fights osteoporosis and heart disease. Often tolerated better by
women who suffer from estrogen side effects like breast tenderness, bloating, migraines.
- Cons: Weaker than the other
estrogens, so you often need to adjust your dosage to eliminate symptoms like hot flashes.
In addition, you often need a higher dosage than you would of Premarin or Estrace.
